Venice
Venice is the capital of the Veneto region in northern Italy and was built on more than 100 small islands in an Adriatic lagoon. As traffic routes there are only a few streets and almost exclusively canals, including the Grand Canal with its palaces from the Renaissance and Gothic. On the central St. Mark's Square is St. Mark's Basilica with Byzantine mosaics and the belfry, from which the view over the red roofs of the city.The Gothic Doge's Palace with its pink and white marble facade is located on the east side of the piazza. Before the Christian Lent, this area becomes the center of the Carnival of Venice, where the revelers meet in elaborate masks and costumes. A gondola ride away is the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, an influential modernist gallery, as well as the Galleria dell'Accademia, a museum of paintings and sculptures of the Renaissance, including Michelangelo's David. The covered Rialto pedestrian bridge leads to a market where many of the seafood restaurants in Venice meet their needs.
