Montreux is a traditional spa town located between steep hills on the shores of Lake Geneva. The city is known for its mild microclimate and the Montreux Jazz Festival in July. The waterfront, lined with flowers, sculptures and Mediterranean trees, features sumptuous buildings from the Belle Époque. On an island in front of the shore lies the medieval castle Chillon. The moated castle includes ramparts, reception halls and a chapel with 14th-century murals. The Casino Barrière houses slot machines, bars and the Queen Studio Experience. The exhibition is dedicated to the British rock band and their many albums recorded here. A cog railway runs from Montreux to the rocky peaks of the Rochers-de-Naye, with panoramic views over the lake and the surrounding mountains. From the harbor modern speedboats and nostalgic steamers depart to other locations on Lake Geneva. Behind Vevey extend the terraced vineyards and medieval villages of the Lavaux region.
