Interlaken is a traditional holiday resort in the mountainous Bernese Oberland in central Switzerland. The city is located in a narrow, long valley between the emerald-green Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The Aare, which flows through the community, is lined on both banks of old wooden houses and parks. In the surrounding mountains, with their dense forests, alpine meadows and glaciers, there are numerous hiking trails and ski slopes. On the other bank of the Aare lies the village of Unterseen, on whose market square there is a late Gothic church with a stone tower. The funicular to the summit of Harder Kulm offers panoramic views of the lakes and mountains. A cog railway takes you to the Schynigen Platte, a plateau with a botanical alpine garden. Even higher up is the Jungfrau Railway to the Jungfraujoch, where the highest station in Europe (``Top of Europe``) is located at an altitude of 3,454 m. Interlaken also provides a good starting point for boat trips on the lakes as well as exploring the traditional high mountain villages and hiking trails for which the Bernese Oberland is known.
Paraglide above the Swiss Alp peaks on a tandem flight with transport from Interlaken. At the launch spot in Beatenberg, listen to a safety talk with a small group of no more than 10 people, and then take off with a guide. Gaze down at Lake Thun and the snowy summits of the Jungfrau as you soar above the alpine landscape; the views are as breathtaking as the flight.
